Creative legend, mad genius - whatever you may call him, it's safe to say that Kanye is the G.O.A.T. in more ways than one. And with over two decades in the game, he's found a way to reinvent himself time and time again to stay relevant in the world of rap, fashion, and all-around culture. So with a legacy like that, seems like there's quite a load to learn about the man, right? Well, that's what one professor at a Canadian university thought, leading him to make a whole university class dedicated to Yeezus.
It's all thanks to Professor Yassin Alsalman, also known by his stage name Narcy, who teaches in the Fine Arts department at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec. An artist himself, it's no surprise that he was inspired by Kanye's changing public image. So, he created a course titled Kanye vs. Ye: Genius by Design, which aims to cover the rapper's polarizing career - presidential candidacy included. For rap lovers studying at the university, it's a must-take for the Fall 2022 semester, and for Alsalman it marks a dream-come-true for the culture-inspired professor. "Listen, in 2013, I was given the opportunity and blessing to teach at Concordia University," he said in his Instagram caption. "Over the course of years, I grew the class from 30 students to 200 a semester, moved us into an auditorium. I taught classes on ATCQ, Lauryn Hill... It became a huge part of my life and a responsibility."
"Post Pandemic, Inshallah, I want to bring something new and fresh to students," Professor Yassin continued. "An opportunity... to discuss the world through the lens of one of the most influential artists of our generation. This class isn't only about Kanye," he continued. "It's about community, creativity, responsibility, accountability, fame and mental health, dreams and nightmares - and most importantly, self-actualization." And with only 200 spots in this iconic class, you can bet that there will be a long waitlist to learn more about Ye.
