When Mad Max: Fury Road hit the screens in 2015, it instantly became an action movie classic, sweeping up thousands of positive reviews and winning big during award season. But looking back, things behind the scenes weren't so good, especially between the film's two stars, Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron. And while their beef was kept quiet around the film's release, now they're not holding back when it comes to talking about their struggles in working together.
The secrets spilled in Kyle Buchanan's latest release, Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road, a book that tells the story of the two-decade-long journey in making the movie. And while readers were expecting to learn more about the ins and outs of the multi-million dollar budget blockbuster, the big takeaway from the book was actually the extreme tension between the film's stars. And thanks to interviews with the film's cast and crew, we have a full picture of what went down. "I remember vividly the day... Charlize got there right at eight o'clock, sat in the War Rig, knowing that Tom's never going to be there at eight... He was notorious for never being on time in the morning," confessed camera operator March Goellnich. After waiting for several hours, Charlize's frustration came to a boil, and eventually she began cursing about her "disrespectful" co-star.
Having heard the insults thrown his way, Hardy charged up to Charlize and confronted her. Scared for her safety, the incident resulted in Theron requesting "protection" during shooting. "I didn't feel safe," she later admitted, in addition to throwing shade at the director for not addressing the problem head-on. And with his dirty laundry aired to the world, Tom knew it was time to make a statement. "The pressure on both of us was overwhelming at times," the 44-year-old actor confessed. "What she needed was a better, perhaps more experienced partner in me."
