To say the 2019 Joker movie was a success would be an incredible understatement. The film, which told the origin story of Batman's arch-enemy, broke records everywhere, and its star, Joaquin Phoenix, picked up his third 'Best Actor' Academy Award for his performance. After it brought in over $1 billion at the global box office, it was just a matter of time until a sequel was announced. Earlier this month, this news has finally been confirmed - and there's so much to know already...
First and foremost, the actor behind the mask, Joaquin Phoenix, will be returning to the iconic role. With rumors circulating that the actor earned just over $50 million for the first installment, this is a happy yet expected update. As with the first movie, Phoenix will be directed by Todd Phillips, and Scott Silver will co-write the script. With this talented group back in action, this movie will likely do as well as its predecessor.
In other casting news, rumors are circulating that Lady Gaga has been offered the role of Harley Quinn. Comic book fans are well-aware of the Joker's complicated on-and-off relationship with Quinn, who also happens to be his psychiatrist. Although Margot Robbie portrayed the character in the 2021 film The Suicide Squad, this film is believed to be set in a different DC Universe to that. If Gaga were to land the role, this would not be her first time working with Phillips, as he produced her Oscar-winning movie, A Star is Born, in 2018.

Teasing the fans, Philips posted an image of a script to his Instagram account. This picture not only revealed that the film's screenplay was ready to go but at the same time announced the movie's title - Joker: Folie á Deux. Named after an actual psychological disorder that involves closely associated people being subjected to identical delusions. While no official synopsis has been released, this gives us somewhat of an idea of what to expect, mainly that there may be another main character involved. With filming scheduled to begin in 2023, we're crossing our fingers for a late 2024/early 2025 release. Until then, stay tuned.
