To promote her upcoming movie Bruised, Halle Berry has collaborated with some of today's best hip-hop artists. The Oscar-winning actress assembled an all-female team, including Cardi B, Young M.A., Flo Mili, City Girls, Saweetie, Baby Tate. and more, to create the perfect soundtrack.
"It feels amazing to be on a project with all women. This is the epitome of sisterhood and womanhood, to say the least. I want to give special thanks to Halle and Cardi," shared artist Dreamdoll, "The Bruised soundtrack feels iconic." And she is not wrong, the album challenges the music industry's standards for women. Berry said, "All these ladies to me are queens. There can always be more than one.”
Each girl has an original song on the playlist, such as Blastoff by Flo Mili and Bet It by Cardi B. Every song added was personally picked by Berry and the Bodak Yellow singer. The Catwomen star explained why she decided to work with Cardi B, who she called the "Queen of hip hop." Berry explained, "Who wouldn’t want to have a Cardi B song and have her voice and her talents on their debut [movie]." Obviously, it isn't Berry's debut acting movie but, it is her first time directing.
Originally the lead role on Bruised, Jackie Justice, was written to be played by white women aged 21. But, when The Call star first heard the storyline, she became intrigued. The actress knew the family drama wasn't written for her, but she persisted. "Why not a Black woman? It's an old genre; there's so many great fight films that have been made. I made the point why it would be worth retelling an age-old story with this new twist," she fought.
The 54-year old actress' character is an MMA (mixed martial arts) fighter. The film follows Jackie's difficult life as she learns how to balance being a successful fighter and athlete while also being a mother. Just like Jackie, Berry had to face her own difficulties while filming. She confessed that two of her ribs had been broken during one of her fight scenes, but she didn't let that stop her! The talented star has created an amazing project, where she is the star, the director, and the woman we can thank for the new all-women soundtrack.
Bruised comes out on November 24. But luckily, we don't have to wait any longer to hear the music, as the album was dropped on November 19.
